You can transfer your domain to other hosting services, but not the actual hosting. I’ve heard Bluehost, NearlyFreeSpeech, ASmallOrange, 1&1, and Dreamhost. I have Dreamhost although it doesn’t have a nice control panel.http://newbieworks.org

1. You have some options:
A. Transfer the domain registration to the registrar of your choice (after a 30-60 hold period after registration).
B. Transfer the DNS to the DNS host of your choice.
C. Keep the domain and DNS hosted and GoDaddy and point the domain name to an IP address of your choice.
So no, you are certainly not obligated to build my website with them.
2. While there are many web site hosting options out there, some free and some not, I would choose your host based on the level of customer service that they are able to provide, especially if you are new to websites. Be sure to look into HostMySite.com when making your decision.

Where you have your domain name hosted matters not. As far as websites are concerned, I have three webs on yahoo. If you just want a personal web site then google has a free version you can get simply by opening up a free account for mail. Go to http://www.google/mail.com .

No, you will not be stuck. You can register domains with a company and buy hosting from another company.
Usually, domain registrar like GoDaddy.com or JordanSoft.com will park your domain and a temporary parked page displays when visitors go to your Web Site. The parked page indicates you are reserving the site until you find a hosting provider. You are free to choose any hosting provider.
Some domain sellers, like JordanSoft.com, offer free hosting with every domain. So you will only pay for the domain, and get domain with hosting.
