The problem with “free” domains is that there is always a catch. No one can really afford to offer truly free domain names because in order to provide a domain, there are certain “back-end” costs that the company must pay. So if they gave you a really free domain, they’d be losing money on each domain given away.
I recently switched from GoDaddy and now use Fyne.Com. Their prices are pretty cheap and they’re honest people, customer service has been great.
