Can I Register A Domain Name With A Cheap Registrar And Transfer It To Another Hosting Company? Pros And Cons?

I’ve decided on a particular hosting serivce which charges exorbitant domain name registration fees. I’m wondering if I can save on the domain registration fee by signing up with a cheaper registrar and then transferring it to the hosting service of my choice, and if there are any costs and downsides in this.

Yes you can. I even recommend it!
    PRO’s
    1. If you found a domain name registrar you like you should go with them. It’s even better if it’s their core business.
    2. It’s really easy to setup. You just have to add your hosts name servers to your domain name (basically you just write three lines in your domain’s control panel like: ns1.somehosting.com ns2.somehosting.com ns3.somehosting.com) and that’s it!
    3. Your domain name is registered with another company so if you have any problems later on with your hosting, you can easily switch hosts, just copy your site content to a new host and point your domain to their name servers.
    CON’s
    1. Most hosting companies give you a free domain name with your hosting plan, and they usually renew it for free as long as you host with them, but since your company charges a lot for a domain name registration it’s probably not one of them, so it’s not a problem.
P.S. You didn’t wrote the name of a hosting company that you decided on, but you should check one of these:
    1. For a small to medium traffic site (like up to 100K visitors monthly):
I recommend either Godaddy Economy or the Deluxe plan:http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy/
    (prices from $4.74/month – $6.99/month)
    or Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html
Their standard price is $9.95/month ($119.40/year)
but you can use the promo code PLUS and get
$50 discount +2 Free domain names.
    Disk space: Unlimited
    Bandwidth: Unlimited
    2 Free domain names
    Unlimited domains and subdomains
    Price: $5.78/month ($69.40/year)
    2. If you need something better/more expensive I recommend:http://www.mediatemple.comhttp://www.slicehost.com
    Prices start from $20/month.

Yes you can. In fact, I would recommend the following:
Find a web hosting company you would like and after you sign up they’ll give you nameservers to set in your registrar. No need to transfer the domain after that.
I did the same thing using http://www.GotHosting.org and they made it pretty seamless. After I signed up I got an auto email with all the information. Plus their rates were very competitive.
On another note you could try Hostgator and be sure to use a coupon site like http://www.hostingdiscounted.com as they will give you a great discount initially.
