If I buy a .com domain name like on godaddy, then is it possible to have it hosted for free like tranferring the domain name to a free webhost. I’ll pay for the domain name, but I don’t want to pay for the hosting.

Yes. IF the free webhost you are referring to allows for you to have your custom (purchased/owned) domain name. you can just set up your host’s nameserver to point to your domain.
blogger/blogspot is an example of a free blog host that allows this.
