What if I do not use the same domain name on all of them? Would they not even be able to ping each other?
What if I have a windows system? How is the domain name set on XP?

They’re probably assuming that you have a local network of Linux and Windows boxes. Since Linux uses Samba to talk to Windows systems (file sharing, etc), you need to put all the systems on the local network in the same domain or workgroup.
In a Windows system, the domain or workgroup name is found (and modified) on the System tool in Control Panel.
A domain is useful only in a network where you have a windows domain controller (or a Linux system acting as one). This allows one system to do authentication to the network, along with all the file/print/resource sharing, user profile management, etc.
This isn’t a big deal unless you have a mixed network. Having all your hardware on the same IP network is usually good enough for sharing and the like.
