Ensure that the domain name is registered in your name.
It’s mainly price but some may charge you if you want to move your name to another provider.. Not a problem really..
I suggest you have a look at http://www.hosting24.com they will register a domain name for free for life and come with unlimited webspace and unlimited data transfer and you can go with them on a monthly basis.
Also when you sign up with them if you enter in a discount code they will give you 25% off their ridiculously cheap hosting plans. code to use is 25OFF
I host all my sites there and have been more than pleased with their help and support which is available by phone support! I hope this helps

Look for:
1) price – is one of the most important factors
2) domain management control panel – should be easy to manage
3) customer support !! – in case you have any questions
I always buy a domain names form Papa Tiger (www.papatiger.com).
Domain names are all about price and if they allow transferring if in future you want to switch hostings.
I know at http://webhosting.thumbtak.net there is cheap domains offered.
One I would stay away from is godaddy as a lot of people have issues with there support.
