I eventually want to have a website, but first and foremost, I do not want to loose an available domain name I desire. Can I “buy” the domain name now and attach it to a website created later? Please explain.

yes, you will first want to purchase the domain name to make sure it is yours. Create the website and then upload the files to the domain. Depends on who you go through.

Yes. You can buy a domain name from Yahoo!. You can also add on a web plan to your account. I bought my site plan and domain from Yahoo!. They will renew your domain name every year automatically (unless you cancel). I trust Yahoo, but there are other sites you can use. I just like Yahoo.
Take a look at this: http://www.webhostingsearch.com/
