How do sites like 1&1 and Godaddy.com have the right to sell .com/.org/.edu ect names, How can a company “claim” and sell a piece of a distributed comuting network(the internet?)

    They’re not selling the name, they are charging to register the name with ICANN, and telling the DNS servers where to point internet user’s requests for that domains web site.
    The first entity to register a name is considered the owner and can sell or transfer that name to whomever they want, and it will remain so as long as the registration is renewed. If they fail to renew it can be claimed by someone else after a period of time, I think it’s 60 days.

    They go through ICANN the authority for Internet domain Names, and they have the right because the root servers don’t pay for themselves and with out them we wouldn’t be able to resolve Domain names to IP’s and we would be pre www all over again
