How Can I Stop People From Using Fake E-mail Addresses With My Domain Name For Sending Spam?

Category: FAQ   Time: 2009-11-05   Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

I have my own domain name, and there is a spamer out there using a fake email address that ends in my domain. I know about this because my catch-all address is geting complaint letters and spam filter rejection letters identifiying them. As I run a legitmate bussiness, this is costing my credibility and becoming a small PR nightmare. Is there anyway to stop people from doing this? or to make it so that inorder to send e-mail from my addresses it has to use my SMTP server (which is password protected)?

It’s called e-mail spoofing — the forgery of an e-mail header so that the message appears to have originated from someone or somewhere other than the actual source. Distributors of spam often use spoofing in an attempt to get recipients to open, and possibly even respond to, their solicitations.
Since it’s so easy to forge e-mail headers, there’s not a lot you can do to stop it. (This happens to just about every domain at one time or another since spammers are usually just randomly creating the spoofed addresses.) But you should create an auto-reply message explaining what happened and that the spam e-mail is not from you.

Unfortunately this is not a strike of lightning so the person responsible knows you. Once it got into the “SPAM NETWORK” it will remain there.
It takes time and effort to set-up your network, but, you need to change your domain. Download the contacts you have in your email account and domain accounts via print-out. Cancel the domain at once or this will just grow out of control.
Regroup and redesign and upgrade your domain. Those that you need and trust will understand the change you make.
Set-up a new and improved email account. Again share with only those you swear your life for/to. On your business account Yahoo can help you set-up messages that show your account is going through an update. That will keep those needing you on-line until you can contact them.
It is a pain where you know. A person I trusted utilized the same thing and my landscape business almost went into the toilet. The excuse is/was I didn’t know, however, with hackers and spam once it begins it does not end until you end it.
Contact your internet provider to track them with a red flag alert. This should narrow down the insulting party, however, it probably won’t. Contact Yahoo directly via telephone and explain your situation. Maybe, between both the server and Yahoo, the idiot can be found.
In the future, do as I do, keep the log-ins, the passwords, everything to yourself. Redo yourself and rethink whom you can/will trust. Hell of a world ain’t it!
