How Come You Have To Pay For Domain Name?

I thought the World Wide Web, is world wide and public. So how come you have to pay to get your own website, and who does the money go to?

    yes, world wide web is just a community, and if you want to make a presence to share your information, you will need to have a domain name to put up your info. just like you need to get a house in the town.

    You have to pay for the host, the one who holds the domain on their server. When you upload files to your site, those files get physically stored on an actual computer somewhere. The money you pay to register your domain goes to maintain that computer and the staff to keep it up and running 24/7.

    hi u have to pay for website that end with .com .co.uk and u pay for them to hold all you files that u wont on ur website so u pay because u take up space on servers
