You can search for your name here:
http://www.strikedata.com/clients/domainchecker.php
It will tell you the domain is available and walk you through the registration process step by step. You can then checkout and the domain is registered and added to your account. Plus, their customer service is great and can help you should anything go wrong.
Domains are registered for a year at a time. To purchase a domain name a person goes to a domain register like GoDaddy.com or 1and1.com, types in the name they want, if it is avaliable.. you can purchase it for around $10/year.
1and1.com
Godaddy.com
The two above are your best bet and MOST reliable. I have over 400 domains / websites and 90% of them are at GoDaddy.
Here are a few coupons for GoDaddy:
.info for $1.49 – no code needed
.net for $7.99 – gdp1009q
.com for $7.60 – gdbb776
A quick tip: If you do not already have a specific domain in mind, a great website that can help you is http://www.nameboy.com. You can type in a word or words you would like in your domain and the site will pop out domains avaliable which are similar to your chosen words.
If you have additional questions or need some help feel free to contact me.
I will throw one more option out there for you.

Currently .COM names are only at $7.99 per year. Also the hosting plans are quite reasonably priced as well.
Good luck to you!
Go to http://www.nameny.com. search your name, if available register it. Good Luck.
