you can open gmail account for any domain. As you know you can read gmail emails from outlook or thunderbird by using POP3 or IMAP.
First you need to buy a domain. You can do it with http://www.godaddy.com,
set the NS record to any freeware dns
service (like http://www.everydns.net)
So in godaddy control panel set NS record of you domain to:
ns1.everydns.net
ns2.everydns.net
Now go to http://www.everydns.net, create an account and add record that say are you want use gmail to hold your emails.
