How Do I Find Out The Current Owner Of A Domain And Contact Them?

Category: FAQ   Time: 2009-08-31   Tags: , , , , ,

I registered a domain a few years back through yahoo but was unable to maintain its costs.
Now that I’m ready, I’ve found that the domain might be owned by godaddy.com, but I’m not sure.
I just want my domain back, so if anyone could tell me how without going to a third party, please do.

    1. find out who the registrar is at http://www.verisign-grs.com/whois (if it’s a com/net, otherwise use planetwhois.com or another global whois lookup)
    2. go to the site listed for the registrar in verisign’s whois , look for their WHOIS link, and search for the domain
    3. email/call/write to the current registrant of the domain name and their administrative contact if it isn’t the same.
    4. ask them if they would be willing to give or sell you the domain name
    5. have them get in touch with the current registrar regarding how to do a “registrant name change” (their words) or visit their registrars FAQ to find more info about what is required
If they do not respond then you could find a backordering service and try to put in a request to have them try to get the domain name if the current owner deletes it or lets it expire. alternatively you could watch it yourself and try to grab it when it becomes available but your odds of beating a domain prospector (or “domain taster”) from grabbing the domain name first are slim to none

If it is already in use, you are unlikely to get it back. Just register a new one.

do a search for that domain name using whois
