I’m building my website and would like to buy a domain name that GoDaddy shows as being taken. The Domain I want is a common word. The URL shows a Parked Website.
How do I know what the name is worth so I can try and buy it without getting totally screwed?

They look at the popularity in Google and so forth, and calculate an approximate value for the domain name. No guarantee it’s a reasonable one, though. (It calculates a value of about $50,000 for my personal domain, and while my web sites are popular, I don’t think it’s worth that much.)
In any event, a parked domain is owned by someone else. They can set the price to whatever they want, and whether or not it is “reasonable” you don’t have a lot of options. If it is worth the asking price TO YOU, then you can buy it, if not, then you can easily choose a slightly different name or a different top-level domain for your own.
