How Do I Set Up A Domain?

Category: FAQ   Time: 2009-10-31   Tags:

Let’s just say I’ve bought a domain from either godaddy.com or cheap-domainregistration.com
After that… what do I do from there to set up my website? How do I create an FTP account?
Thanks.

You need to buy hosting too.
I recommend one of these: http://www.hosttell.com/
Powweb is on a 50% sale – $3.88/month ($46.56/year), and you get a free domain from them.
Godaddy doesn’t offer a free domain, but you can get one for $2.19 if you’re buying hosting from them. They also have a 20% sale at the moment. (They don’t advertise it anywhere on their site). Use the “Save 20%” link.

Well after buying the domain you have to get it hosted..which I know godaddy.com hosts. I don’t know for sure but I think godaddy may have a sitebuilder to design the site. Or you can use Adobe Dreamweaver or any other web design software. Through the software you can FTP into your hosting company to design the site. Whatever software you use, it’ll explain how to FTP in. Your hosting company will also give you info to ftp into their site.

I think we need to be clear on a few points here. The first stage of setting up a domain name is to reserve the name. This merely gives you the right to use the name, and they will point your domain name to two authoritative name servers.
What you probably need next is a DNS hosting service. This is someone who has a name server that will server out your domain name. It sounds very much to me like you need to purchase web server hosting as well.
You mention GoDaddy. They have some plans you might be interested in, see http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/sh… Cheap-DomainRegistration.com also has hosting plans, see http://www.securepaynet.net/gdshop/hosti…
