How is it that people and small organizations are able to have their own websites even for the most meaningless things? Are they actually paying for those domains? Or is there somehow to get a real website that you can create and edit for free? If there is some way to get a free real website then please let me know. I want to create a site to help bring together my small, rural community. How can i get a free site though??? Please help!!!

So questionable(2009-10-16):

Two things you can do:
1. Go to Officelive.com! They have great hosting, for free. You do, however, need a credit card to sign up for a free domain, only to verify your age and to prevent you from making a lot of accounts. But, trust me, they do not charge for it. I made my web-site at officelive.com, used my credit card, and didn’t get charged at all. officelive.com is from Microsoft, so they are very trustful.
2. If you need to use your website for advanced websites, here is what you do: First, go to http://www.250free.com and make an account. You will use that for hosting. Second, go to dot.tk and get a free .tk website. When it asks you the url, put the url u got from 250free.com. Then you have your own website.

How would you define ‘a real web site’ ??
1. Domain names are not that expensive any more
2. What you do normally pay for are the facilities,
bandwidth, and support should things go wrong.
3 Domains can always be partially linked to ‘free
space’ to offset any cost.
4. Most of the tools you would ever need ( at least
initially ) are Open Source; namely Free, Gratis,
and for nothing.
If it is truly in the name of a good cause, and for the
benefit of others, I may be able to help. Mail me off

I got a domain name through “Domainlagoon” and I use “5gbfree” for my hosting.
