I am afraid that since it is a free domain service, then the one who register it for me will be able to take it
Can someone please explain how it works?

If they register it, it’s theirs, unless the agreement says otherwise. Read the agreement carefully when signing up. It will tell you.
It always has value when you PAY for it!
