Ah... but he's apparently already contacted the existing owner. So they know it's wanted. They'll surely renew it for the few bucks a year if they think it's worth $300.

How much is it worth. That all depends. I've sold domains for basically what I've paid for them plus a few dollars, and I've sold domains for a LOT more. Most expensive I sold was $10... I paid $35/year x 2 years I had it (network solutions was the only game in town at the time).

Question is, how long till it expires and how badly do you want it. It's not about what a fair price is, but how much you want it and how cheap you can get it. Try to haggle, then ask yourself, is it worth it?

Normally the price for existing domain name itself is $10 per year but if including the web hosting the price is vary and the lowest is $6 (not including web host cost). However, if the domain is taken by someone and you want to buy it, definitely the price is bit expensive... how expensive it is.... it is depends on the words contain in that domain and how popular and how many searches have been done for that words. For an example carinsurance.com (car insurance) might be more expensive than carandinsurance.com (car and insurance), just do some searches on the internet for that domain name to determine the cost... more popular more expensive... more searches been done more expensive.
Why not visit http://www.cheapwebhostingservice.biz to search the availability other domain name that almost exactly the same as hers/him but the extension is might differ... *.com, *.net, *.us and etc
