I am trying to configure a DNS record to point to a website without a unique ip. The site is a subdomain on dreamhosters … hostname->ip lookup shows 208.97.159.48, but when I configure my ‘A record’ to point to that ip, it takes me to http://apache2-igloo.bottlecap.dreamhost.com/ instead of my particular subdomain.
So far I have done this:
A record -> point to the IP “208.97.159.48″
CNAME record -> point to subdomain name eg “foo.dreamhosters.com.”
This still takes me to http://apache2-igloo.bottlecap.dreamhost.com/ instead of my website though. Could anyone help with this? Let me know if it’s not possible…

The sub domains on the server all need a configuration set up to make them the official domain you are using, speak to your hosting company about this.
