I don’t believe you can possibly compete with the big players in this area. You won’t be able to grab domain names as cheaply and effectively as they can. If you look at the domain auctions many names sell for $10. For a big player there is plenty of profit in this. For someone who has to use the services of one of these companies to make the transactions happen you can’t afford it. Then there is the whole expiring domain market place that has effectively been taken over by big players (http://www.candidity.org/thedrop.htm).
In summary, unless you have a lot of cash and are going to get yourself set up with ICANN, Verisign etc you can’t play this game.
Regarding the posts below, there is a reason that .info domains are $1.99 and have been so for a long time. Nobody wants them. I can also put any price I want on a domain name and post it to a trading site. But that doesn’t mean anyone will pay the price. The value of a domain is what someone is willing to pay for it and nothing more. Don’t be fooled by people telling you otherwise. If you follow the advise below you will just lose money.

buy some domains: then park them or auction them. http://sedo.com (free domain parking). Buy domains frmo http://godaddy.com cheaper than most places. .com for $8.95 and .info for $1.99. I would start out buying a couple .info then some .com domains.
