I am after a free domain name and hosting.
I have came across websites like www.freedomainproject.com and www.freedomainsite.com which appear to be free. Does anybody know if you need a credit card to sign up with these sites?

Free sites do not require a credit card nor do they provide domain names. Just free sub-domains. You have to pay for a domain name unless it is offered free by the hosting site in the package you buy.

Free domains are certainly hard to come by, and I remember that when I signed up for Microsoft’s hosting service they asked for either my SSN or a debit/credit card. I had gotten a Debit card from paypal, and that ended up being fine… I would make a PayPal account and then get a debit card from their (they don’t ask you for anything except your home address and stuff. my parents were pretty cool with it.) For freedomainproject I’d check their site’s TOS, you may find unsettling news: http://freedomainproject.com/tos.php
As for free hosting, I’d use 000webhost.com (if I recall that to be the domain). Largest hosting for free, and it’s not too fast, but it satisfied me for a bit.
The ‘free’ domains you mentioned come with fine prints. Most people will never be completely happy with these kind of free hosting. Try a cheap paid-hosting for a change. Some are as cheap as a day’s meal.
Would you say $4.95 for a full year of web hosting a good deal? Would paying less than $5 for a year be reasonable for a more reliable hosting plan? Are you waiting for a once-in-a-lifetime crazy hosting promotion so you do not need to jump from one free hosting to another?
I found a hosting company giving crazy promotion only for this month (July 2009), so hurry. I pasted the link in the source below.
Have fun.
I already tried making my own website with several free hosts, but unfortunately, none of them satisfied me and I never tried to publish any of them. So, I started googling about Web2.0 style free hosting with great support and I found few. You can build your own professional looking site quickly and easily with do-it-yourself website builder, Ad free hosting, Social networking tools like Facebook, Twitter integration, Add 3rd party content like Youtube, Myspace video, Google maps.

Good hosting costs. Netrillium and e-starr have plans where you get a free domain name with a package of hosting. if youre a beginner use geocities (if it still exists), or some other free hosting site, buy a domain from godaddy.com for 8$ a year and redirect the domain name to the free webpage.
No such thing as a “free domain name”
See http://www.freedomainproject.com TOS
“5. ADVERTISING BANNERS
As a free user of our services, it is required that you display our footer and to not “hide”, “cover-up”, “kill”, or modify our footer in any way. We reserve the right to change the size of the footer at any time.”
and what happens at the end of the “free” one year registration?
“Any domain names registered with only remain free for 12 mths and after the expiry of 12months, we are under no obligation to renew it.”
“We reserve the right, in our sole discretion, to terminate your free Domain Name service with respect to any domain name that you subsequently transfer to another registrar. You understand and acknowledge that your continued use of our free Domain Name service is conditioned on your domain remaining registered with us and not violating our other stated conditions.”
Their site indicates no credit card required.
They don’t guarantee that your personal info gathered during registration won’t be sold.
They don’t tell you what it’ll cost to renew at end of the first year registration.
Free hosting at http://www.freedomainsite.com costs.
from their FAQ
“3. How do you pay for the domain name and/or web hosting? The advertiser pays us when you sign up for playing games, checking out software, or getting a free trial offer.”
“8. I don’t want to sign up for a free trial offer. Can you just give me a domain name for free? No. FreeDomainSite can’t afford to do that. However, if you are interested in a barter arrangement, contact us at http://www.freedomainsite.com/contact.asp.”
http://www.freedomainsite.com states “no credit card required” but some of their offers do “MOST DO NOT REQUIRE A CREDIT CARD”
Couldn’t find any policy regarding banner ads on their free hosting. The “free hosting details” link leads to blank page.
Couldn’t find their privacy policy. Do they sell your personal info??
