Pick out your Internet service provider first, and they will take you through the process of selecting a domain name. I used “Go Daddy” and was very pleased with them. The domain name will be somewhere under 10 dollars a year in US… and their economy hosing costs about 60 US dollars.
I would start with a search… enter the names you would consider, one by one, and eventually you may come across one that was given up by someone else. Those are usually the best names. You may also want to search for a page that lists abandoned domain names… I forget what that page is called.. but it shouldn’t be to hard to find on Google.
Just type in “domain names” and another word like “unused” and if you find one that you like, just fill in that one when you set up your account with your Internet host.
    I hope that helps.

I recommend My Webbie Hosting. Their .co.uk is only US$17 for two years.

My advice is not to automatically go with the lowest priced domain provider. Often these types of domain registrar are nearly totally automated (so as t o keep their costs down) and it is difficult to get to talk to anyone, which you may well need to do.
Go to someone ( we use http://www.electricnames.co.uk ) who can give top quality service, is staffed by experts who are always contactable by phone. Ask about service level agreements (SLAs).
