I Need A Domain For Free? Or Where Godaddy Gets Their Domains?

Category: FAQ   Time: 2009-07-26   Tags: , , , , , , ,

I need a site (.com, .net, .info, .us) but it needs to be an acutual domain, not yournamehere.tk or yournamehere.co.nr. I already have everything I need to run on it (mysql, apache, ubuntu, server, files (html, css, asp and php)). Anybody know where I can get a free domain?

You will not find free domains since it costs money to register a domain. If you are willing to pay a nominal fee then http://www.godaddy.com would be your best option.
There are a couple of alternatives though, if you don’t mind advertisement on your site Microsoft Office Live Basics offers a free domain http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/office… The only catch is that it will include their logo and link to their service on your site. They are hoping to snag a large share of the market by offering a free domain, hosting and 500MB of storage. It will require a credit card to verify your age.
You can also visit http://www.dot.tk/ and register a free domain but it will end in .tk rather than .com.
You could also try a free Web hosting site like http://www.freewebs.com and then use http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ to get a free sub domain. It will redirect the URL to your site without a long difficult Web address.

You’ll only get it free as part of a package deal, like with your hosting plan.
Bluehost offers free domain names. I like them, but they do cost a little more than GoDaddy.
The free domain name is for new customers who don’t have a domain name yet.http://www.bluehost.com/ (I like Bluehost but they cost a little more.)
Here is a list of some other hosts that offer free domain names with hosting. (Yeah, with hosting… no one is going to just give a way a domain name without asking for something in return… they’ll want you to host with them, or allow advertisting on your site, etc.)http://www.thefreecountry.com/webhosting…
Also, you can check on these, but make sure you are aware of the “catches” first… they do have some requirements and limitations.http://free-name.org/http://www.freedomainsite.com/free_domai…http://www.domainsarefree.com/

I am afraid there is no such site that gives away free domains.
Alright, I don’t know if you know this, but um, GoDaddy doesn’t get their domain names for free, they wholesale.
This would be where I would normally suggest to stay on a freeserver and just wait until you can buy your own domain, but unlike most people who ask this question, you seem very knowledgable in web design. Maybe you can set up a paypal account, and try and offer layouts or something to earn some money? I don’t know, just a thought.
