A domain name can be purchased without having a web site to attach it to. Once you buy the name it is yours. You will need to renew once a year to keep the domain name.
    Also,
If you plan on purchasing hosting for your web site, the Domain Name will be Free with your package. This is true for almost every hosting provider plan.

Once you have paid for a domain name, similar to anything physical you would buy, you own it….Most domain names are leased from 1-3 years so pay attention to small details such as if it is renewable….

All the domain name providers let you check it out. 1 & 1 are good. Usually there is a box on their website where you put the name in that you want and the website then tells you if it is taken or not.

You can register a domain cheap at http://www.doggydomains.com Once you register it, no one else can use it unless you let it expire.

Have a look at the BT one…simply type in the name you fancy and it will come up with a big list of what is available.
Then pay the fee and it’s yours.
They also do a very simple web-hosting package. http://www.bt.com/domains/

I use Easilyme.co.uk – They are very good.
Be aware of Cyber Squatting though. If you get the .co.uk someone may get the .com – This can lead to confusion.

Once you register it, it’s yours to use. Most registrars allow you to “lock” a domain so nobody can try to steal it, as well.
