I know I can cancel my service, but do I retain the right to take my name elsewhere OR does yahoo own it?

    Yahoo owns it for a certain period of time to a max of three months after the domain expires.
    If they don’t renew it, then you can buy it from an another domain service provider and just park it until you need it.
    I buy my domains here. http://www.novogenus.com. It’s not cheap but you own the domain and have easy access to you Domain Manager.
