I know that godaddy.com does the whole web hosting thing for like a two dollars. But they also have a “.coms” available for ten. What’s the best thing to do. I’m a advertising student, and I want a site to impress potential employers. I don’t like the look of geocities and google sites. I’m willing to pay, I just need to know what’s best.

I thing you are confusing a few things. You can register a .com domain for $10/year or so, but that just gives you the name. Web hosting is where you site will actually be set up, at godaddy that will cost you about $5 or $6 per month.
The look of your site will controlled completely by yourself. Its typically the free web hosts that want to impose their look on to your site, but not all in fact will do that
Godaddy hosting will do you just fine.

I use godaddy and would recommend it. If you want to impress then you have your own .com yourname.com is always a good one for portfolios.
Unless your name is BradPitt then you are sh1t out of luck because I’m guessing your domain name might be a bit hard to get
