Is A Free Domain Name Possible?

Category: FAQ   Time: 2009-11-27   Tags: , , ,

Is there anyway on earth to get a free domain name for a website? I dont mean something like freewebs.com/whatever. I mean a normal domain name like Google or something you’d make up and buying the name on godaddy.

No, but you can easily get one for under 10 bucks a year. I buy my domain names from http://www.omnis.com/ for about 7 bucks a year. I like Omnis because they give you full access to manage your DNS entry manually. This allows you to easily hook up your domain to Google Apps, Google AppEngine, Amazon Web Services (like CouldFront), and many other cheap or free could-based servers.
If you know what you’re doing, you can easily run a website with moderate traffic for about 20-30 bucks a year.

There are free domain names with free hosting, however there is a catch. Free domain names and hosting are done by companies who force you to use their names in your url. Example:
http://www.yourdomain.theirdomain.com. Not very professional looking, but it is free.
