MJ is definitely a registered trademark. His work is all copyrighted.
Technically speaking anyone using the MJ name or likeness for commercial purposes (for profit) would need to get written consent to the copyright/ trade market owners.
I think based on the godady domain, “michaeljacksonofficialsite.com” could easily be taken down and the site owner could be sued for false and misleading advertising, plus copyright and trade market violations unless the site owner obtained expressed written consent from those controlling such rights.
One cannot call their website an official website if it is not a true statement.
As for using your birth name Ford in a domain is fine, but if you plan to sell cars on that website or make any reference to Ford, Inc. you might have some attorney call you up and send you a cease and desist letter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cease_and_d…

If his “people” were smart, they registered his name years ago.
Anyone can register anything as a name, but the copyright owner needs to assert rights to get the domain name back.
So, dont by the domain unless you can show a compelling interest in the domain name. For example, if your legal name is Michael Jackson, then you have a compelling interest. You also may have a fight on your hands.

You have to look at details. It is only addressed by a legal counsel.
