New To Building Web Sites?

Category: FAQ   Time: 2009-12-28   Tags: ,

I just bought my first domain name from godaddy and I am very ignorant and new to this. So what was all that “buy a web page creator” stuff after I bought the domain name. So did I just buy the name? How do I build a web-site? What happened? Am I just sitting on the name until I decide to put stuff up? Please help.

If you only paid somewhere from $8 to $20 as an annual fee, then you only bought a domain name.
To create a website, you will also need to buy some webhosting space from someone. Godaddy offers this, but there are tons of other webhosts out there that offer this service. Just because you paid for the domain name through Godaddy does not mean you have to use them for the webhost. If you use anothe service, you will just have to set your namerservers on your webhosting account to the Godaddy nameserver settings.
Once you establish your website account, you can start creating a website. You can do this different ways, you can create it on your own computer using special software such as Dreamweaver, and then upload it or FTP it to your account, or some webhosts let you create it remotely using their dedicated software, what you saw referred to as “web page creator”. Besides Godaddy, Yahoo offers this type of webhosting services.
If all this sounds a little confusing, you will just need to do some research. I suggest you start at the link I listed here and go from there.

You have just bought the domain name necessary for a website, but nothing else. You will need to decide whether you want to buy your web hosting plan through GoDaddy or another third party. They’re plenty of hosting plans out there, but be careful because you need to know what your needs are for the website. If you look at GoDaddy’s plans you’ll see that they vary depending on bandwidth, storage. number of domains, email accounts, autoresponders, etc. You’ll want to do your research before making the next step. You also want to look at the length of the contract that they may want from you. Usually the pricing plan is contingent upon this. You should also do your research on their automated tools that they provide with your plan. This will usually include website applications, web space and access, marketing tools, etc. You really want to do price comparison and review research before making your decision. Make sure you leave room for growth with whatever you decide. I bought my domains from GoDaddy, but not my hosting. Also, make sure to protect your domain names if you go with another hosting plan.
