There are several ways to sell your artwork without needing to get someone to design a complete website for you. It would work but it is more expensive to do it that way and it will take longer.
Several sites provides ways for individuals like yourself to set up online stores. Amazon, Ebay, Yahoo to name a few. This would be the best way to start.
You would want to get a site built specifically for you if you want total control over how the site behaved and looked. There is a lot more involved in doing it this way.
I know Etsy is a good place to sell art-related things, so you can check that out.
Oh, and yes. With so many options for a free website out there, you’d just be wasting your money if you bought services or anything. I know of many websites that actually have a website builder for you. Or, if you know HTML, all the better! You can just upload your own files.
^.^ Good luck!

I don’t know if it’s still around, but you used to be able to post FREE websites at Angelfire.com. You can get HTML help … Try google’ing “clarissa explains it all”
It’s kind of a girly pretty website, but you can get the idea.
You can also visit Elfwood.com (you may need to google that too!), if your art is fantasy or fan based in origin you can post it up there for free…
You could also always try ebay?
I knew NOTHING about web design but made my own site using Yahoo SiteBuiler. It was very easy and affordable. Otherwise, have you considered eBay?
You can go to most any webhosting site and they will have some easy templates to use. Maybe even free websites like at geocities (which is now part of Yahoo). You can pay to have your domain registered by Yahoo and then point it to one of their free/cheap websites.
If you pay some professional site to have it designed, you will probably spend a lot of money – or at least a lot of money for someone who is just starting to sell art. Couple hundred dollars at least I’d guess.
If you want to have it hooked to an e-commerce site where people can order online, you will have to pay money for that or be pretty good at designing websites yourself. You might try e-Bay storefronts if you expect to sell a lot.
