Hi,
I need some help with website domains, i was thinking of setting up a website but its rather confusing sites like godaddy etc let people make and build their own sites for a small fee, others are really expensive and also others are free. What is the difference from a small fee and FREE apart from having to not pay money? Its is different? What way?
If you own a site do you pay for your domain?

A top level domain (com/net/org/etc.) will be around $10 a year, which isn’t bad. It’s the hosting that is expensive.
If you are looking for a lot of space, you’d probably have to spend around $75 a year from a reliable and reputable hosting company. And also realize that the domain and the hosting are considered separate. The domain name is just the name and you need hosting in order to use the domain name.
If you do not need a lot of space I would suggest asmallorange.com. The smallest package is only $25 a year and it comes with 75 mbs of space and 3 gbs of bandwidth. They also sell domains, but I would suggest to get your domain from godaddy as it would be easier for you to manage if you want to change hosts for whatever reason, and that is for every hosting company that sells domain names. You would also get a ton of features like cgi, php, mysql databases, etc.
With a freeserver like Geocities and Freewebs, you will only get a subdomain, limited space and limited features.
So yeah, the main difference, is well, you get what you pay for. You’d get so many perks if you buy your hosting.
You can not get what you get from paid hosting for free. You also can’t get a domain name for free either.
After saying that, there are sites that offer free domain hosting (there are no sites that offer free domain names, you’d have to buy one from GoDaddy or another domain provider), the problem is of course that it is less reliable than paid hosting and you would most likely move from host to host. This is because I am doubtful you’d be with the same host forever if the hosting is free. The company would probably close down within a short while.
You’re right, it is confusing. You have to research, research, research. Once you choose a hosting company that you like, they’ll probably send you an email to explain how to setup the hosting on your domain, if you do buy it from a separate domain provider like GoDaddy. If you buy it from the same hosting company, they’ll automatically set it up for you. But like I said earlier, it’ll be worthwhile to buy it from GoDaddy so it’ll be easier for you to manage your domain if you choose to go with different hosts.
The very cheap ones get by because they stuff their web-servers with thousands of other sites, which makes it so much more likely that your site will be off air either because the server has crashed due to a ‘bad’ site, the server can’t keep up with demand, or is being blocked because of spammer sites on there.
If your business is valuable to you, then you should be prepared to pay a reasonable amount for a good quality, reliable service.
If you want to build a site that you hope will grow over the years forget the word FREE. You can usually buy your domain and host it and withe the use of Adsense have it self sufficient in terms of cost. Building and running a website is a bit like building a house; it needs GOOD foundations. Have a look at http://www.ds32.com for good basic information on all aspects of websites.
All I can say to you on an honest basis is that some of these online opportunities are proven to be scams that is very true therefore it is about researching to see what is genuine and what is not however some people think that online businesses are get rich quick schemes which they are not they take alot of work just like any business however the rewards for that work will be good. I have been a personal development and success coach for 5 years now and the most genuine opportunity I have found is a 3 1/2 year old company.http://www.coachofsuccess.com
