Category: FAQ   Time: 2009-09-05   Tags: , , , , , ,

I am thinking about getting a domain name and the .com version is taken but the .org is not. I am wondering what the difference between the endings are besides less traffic? Accurate answers please, and if you can please provide as much information as possible along with a link.

    COM is short for Company, and ORG is short for organization. While COMs get more traffic, ORGs aren’t too bad to have if you are an organization. If you’re not an organization, youy could always try a CC or a US.

    Just because the extension is a .org and not a .com does not mean you will receive “less traffic.” The extension plays no role when it comes to ranking in a search engine. If people know the extension is .org and .com then they will type it. So there would not be any traffic loss here. The main difference is really only what they stand for. ORG was created with the intention of “organizations.” Unicef, GiveBlood, Goodwill, and other companies considered organizations usually do not even own the .com, they own .org. COM is for “communication” which pertains to just about anything. In today’s world people use them both. There are many developed websites out there using the .org extension which are not in fact organizations. Either one works, there is no significant different between them other than what they were originally intended to represent.

    Don’t trust any cheap service, many of them don’t allow you to have full control on your domain name. If you’re going to buy domain names, http://www.goldpuma.com is the lowest cost service which is full-featured and really works for you ($9.99). They offer free extras with every domain name:
    Quick Blogcast
    Hosting with Web site builder
    Personalized Email Account
    Starter Web Page For Sale/ Parked Page
    Domain Forwarding
    Domain Masking
    100-Pack Email Forwarding
    Total DNS Control
    Change of Registration
    Status Alerts
    Domain Locking

    depend on your business type. if you are thinking about ecommerce go for .com. if you are building a organization go for .org. .com is more popular. when we type a address/name we first think about .com. and i think it was the first extension introduced. Good Luck.

    .com is for commercial websites
    .org is for organisations (generally non-commercial ones)

    .com is american and .org is something else

  7. cob(2009-09-06):

    .com = company
    .org = organization
    but, .com is more popular so people choose that. i would go with .com
