ICANN (the company that gives them) doesn’t give them away for free, so anyone who gives you one for free is getting something in return – like $10/month for $4 worth of hosting. A domain name only costs a few dollars a year, so don’t get suckered into paying tens or hundreds of dollars for it.
(Microsoft gives you free hosting and a free domain name – they pay for it – for a limited time. then you have to pay or you lose the domain name.)

All free services offer sub-domains not real domains.
Don’t trust any cheap service, many of them don’t allow you to have full control on your domain name. If you’re going to buy domain names, http://www.GoldPuma.com is the lowest cost service which is full-featured and really works for you. They offer free extras with every domain name:
Quick Blogcast
Hosting with Web site builder
Personalized Email Account
Starter Web Page For Sale/ Parked Page
Domain Forwarding
Domain Masking
100-Pack Email Forwarding
Total DNS Control
Change of Registration
Status Alerts
Domain Locking
…
1and1.com gives free domains with webhosting plan.
Microsoft Office Live provides free webhosting and a free domain with your free webhosting, so that’s as close to free as you’re going to get:http://www.microsoft.com/smallbusiness/p…
If I were you, I’d just pay to register the domain so that you have full control over it.
Make sure that you read the fine print if you get a free domain through the companies above. For example, with the Micrsoft plan, if you want to switch the domain name to a different registar and get your own webhosting, you have to buy the domain from Microsoft.
Some hosting companies – like dreamhost – will give you a free domain name for signing up for their hosting packages.
Other than that I’ve never heard of free domain names.
A .co.uk address will cost £5 a year from 123-reg.co.uk.
Don’t be so bloody stingy.
