What Is My Ftp Host? What Is Host Directory?

Category: FAQ   Time: 2009-12-29   Tags: , ,

Hi,
I am trying to create a web site on godaddy.com. I am being asked to enter my FTP host and HOST directory. How do I find out what they are? Thanks.

I’m guessing that you are inputting this information into a program such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage. You can also upload things to GoDaddy using their web based FTP client. I wouldn’t recommend that because their site has terrible navigation, but if you are ever in a pinch you can hunt it down. GoDaddy is not like most of the web hosts I’ve used in the past. Normally your ftp site is something as clever as ftp.< >.com and your host directory is public_html. In GoDaddy, for me at least and I imagine it is the same for all their users, my ftp host is < >.com or whatever you registered. So yahoo would put in yahoo.com, and you might be redshoes.net or the like. The host directory is blank. You just dump everything right on the top level. I don’t know of any exceptions to this with GoDaddy, and if you are a basic user you likely don’t need to worry about it. Now one warning, I have a different user name and password combination for ftp access as that of my web page access. You can see that type of information by logging into your account at http://www.godaddy.com I think that will work for you.
