I think Godaddy.com has free website reserves, not to sure, there may be a limit for X amount of weeks before you have to buy it to keep it.
Now that I think about it, when I just was inquiring to my friend about buying a domain for my new business + website, before we finalized buying the domain name when I went to the website I think godaddy said they already had it reserved for me.
But until you want to add content to your page, I think they keep the name reserved for you.

You can get domains as cheap as $5.99 or even $1.99 @ yahoo domains. The AVERAGE price lays around $6.95.
    Hope this helped!
