    There are a number of master servers out there, called “Domain Name Service” which contain large databases which link a domain name to a specific IP address. Domain registrars control the entries made in the database. Each time you type in a URL, a query is sent to a DNS server to find the IP address for the domain name, then the IP address is used to communicate with the server at the domain’s IP address. If you know the IP address, you do not NEED a DNS entry. The names in the DNS database is simply a convenience so you and I can use familiar words and such as domain names. You can substitute the IP address for the domain name if you know it at any time. Hackers do this all the time. They simply put up a server with no DNS entry for a domain and then tell their friends the IP address of the server and their friends can use it just like any other server you and I would use.

    The domain name is a relatively friendly (and easy to recall) name that points to a particular IP address. For example:
    answers.yahoo.com = 209.73.187.220
    google.com = 72.14.207.99
    It’s a lot easier to remember google.com then it is to remember 72.14.207.99. And it’s possible the IP will change if the computer configuration there changes. They’ll just change the IP address that the domain name points to.

    A domain name translates to an IP, so visitors to your site can say, “I think I will visit http://www.yahoo.com today” instead of saying “I think I will visit 69.147.114.210 today.” Also, IP addresses can exist seperately from domain names. You can have an IP without a domain.

    Computers need numbers to contact each other, an IP address is a standardized form of address which they and all other network equipment (routers etc) understand. People have difficulty remembering these as they are all very much alike, so we use names for web sites and network hosts. The domain name is set in the domain registrar’s dns (Domain NAme Service) to point to the correct IP address for the machine hosting the service. This acts as a sort of telephone directory for machines to look up when we enter the URL or web address.
