What Is The Source Of My Chest Pain?

The problem started when I was in a martial arts class. For a demonstration one of my instructors had me in a rear-naked choke: http://www.ju-jitsuschool.com/images/juj… and he sat back while holding me tightly in an abrupt manner. On the night after the class I felt my chest was stiff – right in the centre. And I just felt like there was something that kind of needed adjusting or putting back in place or something, I can’t describe it. Anyway, for a couple of weeks or maybe 1 month my symptoms were: pain in centre of chest when taking deep breaths, a really funny sensation when I laid down flat on my back that would go away once I was laid down flat for 20 seconds or so, pain when doing sit-ups, feeling out of breath easier than usual when exercising, and feeling like I’m out of breath or that I need to open a window to get some fresh air when not exercising.
This seemed to have passed but then came back, but was only relatively mild – more of an annoyance than anything. Then I was at another martial arts class and someone was on top of me and they applied a lot of pressure on my chest. At the time I felt a funny sensation and then my chest appeared to be inflamed again. This time worse, the same symptoms form the first incident were present, but this time the pain had moved slightly to the left and slightly down as opposed to be at the level where my sternum is. This time it seemed like it was also an abdominal injury where it was the tissue on the outside that was painful. It also hurt when I twisted.
After a month or so, the problem had subsided, but again, at another martial arts class we were wrestling and someone had what is called double underhooks: http://www.geocities.com/global_training… (see the guy on the left with his hands clasped together. So I was sort of being squeezed. I remember after that the pain was more intense than it had ever been and I was almost debilitated. I thought I might have had a broken rib – I actually wished I had a broken rib as that would have probably healed and actually went away eventually. This time the abdominal soreness that had been present was gone and even though the pain was intense for the first couple of days after exactly a week it was as if this incident had done me a favour as the problem seemed to subside much quicker – however this time opposite to my chest pain site I would have mild pain in my back.
At this point I learned my lesson, no more wrestling and no more grappling. I consulted a doctor and he said it’s chostochondritis and it should go away in 6 weeks, and you will not be prone to this thing again once you let it heal he said. So I rested up from December the 6th to 8th of march. Round about the end of February and the beginning of march the problem was almost gone no pain when taking deep breaths, even if I crunched up. And on 13th of march the problem was to my knowledge a thing of the past, I’d stopped thinking about it and it had completely disappeared.
I must also add that at the start of March I mildly inflamed the problem doing chest dips but the inflammation was only mild and to my surprise went away after only a couple of days.
Then, I was doing some dead lifts in the gym: http://kbierek.powweb.com/shapefit-pics/… . I was using a challenging weight (but not my maximum) and I think my technique was not great, I don’t think I had my chest sticking out as you’re supposed to ensure that your back is straight. After my second set, my chest was noticeably painful, so I made sure to correct my technique and I carried on and did my third and final set. Where after that the chest was no worse than after the second set but still painful. Since then I have been in agony and I get a really sharp pain when I breath in deeply. I am really annoyed, with my doctor and with my luck as the problem was completely gone to my knowledge. I am seriously considering seeing a chiropractor as I have been told that this kind of thing can be easily adjusted and as the pain site seems to move every time I have an incident where the injury is inflamed, at present it is more near my ribs than chest, and even where my lats are and also my back. Can you please advise me as I am desperate?

Sounds like you have costochondritis, or an inflammation of the muscles and tendons between where the fronts of your ribs meet. Talk to your medical doctor (I am NOT a doctor!) about treatment options, but probably all you can do is take an anti-inflammatory and rest.
Do yourself a favor and never again talk to whoever told you a “chiropractor” could help you with this problem, chiropractic is nonsense….want proof? Describe exactly the same set of “symptoms” to four different chiropractors, and listen carefully to the answers you get…chances are they will all come up with something different, they will all rub your back (which will of course make you feel a little better) & then they will bill you!
