one has “www” in the url and the other one doesn’t. I purchased a domain from dreamhost (in addition to the free one I obtained when I got hosting) and tryed to host both sites on the same account. However, I when I type the url with “www” included, it gets a “cannot connect to page” type error but the one without “www” works fine.

Chances are there is no entry in your webserver configuration that states any web traffic going to “mydomain.com” is synonymous with going to http://www.mydomain.com.
With Apache configuration, you’ll see something like:
ServerName mydomain.com:80
ServerAlias http://www.mydomain.com
.
.
.
.
Check with your domain name provider and configurations.
nothing really. it just depends how you enter the site in your address bar.
