What’s The Easiest/cheapest Way To Set Up A Web Site?

Category: FAQ   Time: 2009-09-01   Tags: , ,

I’m looking into buying a particular domain name. I’ve done it through Google’s Blogger via GoDaddy.com before but I’m relatively unimpressed with the interface and general look of the entire thing. Any suggestions out there?

You can do everything for free up to and including making your own web server except getting a domain name which is always charged for.
Take a look at http://brisray.com/comp/cwbasics1.htm this goes through the various things you need to do to create a webpage and where to find free hosts. It was created to answer questions such as yours when I was working at a couple of web hosts.
There are newer free editors: NVU has now been replaced by KompoZer – http://kompozer.net/ and Microsoft has released a very good free editor – Visual Web Developer 2008 Express – http://www.microsoft.com/express/product…
At the very least you should learn HTML, CSS and maybe Javascript if you find you need it. If you need server side processing then you need to learn PHP and/or ASP.
DreamWeaver, Web Expression (which has support for both ASP and PHP) and the more specialized SharePoint Designer are all good but for most purposes the newer free editors are just as suitable and write code that validates and without the larger file sizes of older editors.
I made my first website about 12 years ago, I read a book and thought “I can do that”. HTML and CSS is not that hard to learn, but if you like structured learning then there are good college classes around – some are designed to take you to CIW certification levels – which is what I eventually did – http://www.ciwcertified.com/certificatio…
Addition: If you take a course geared towards certification a lot of colleges / universites let take the certification exam when you feel you’re ready and they give you an automatic A for the class if you pass. This means you just take one final exam, you get the certification and the A looks good on your transcript.
I did all my exams from my second year onwards like this and ended up with A+, CIW and MS certifications.

You could learn web designing and do it yourself or pay a web designer to make it for you.
I would checkout RAC Services. http://racservices.net
They explain all about building web sites. They will even build it for you, or teach you how do build it yourself. They offer their help every step of the way at no charge. You can read more about them on their site.
    Good Luck
