I have changed it in www.godaddy.com’s control panel? How long till when I type the www.example.com does example actually go to the right page. I changed it this morning, got a confirmation email from godaddy and was told by some in the know that they thought it took a couple of hours, that was about 12 hours ago.

It could take 2-3 days depending on the ISP and how efficient their internal processes are.
It may take an hour for your request to get to the person who updates DNS. It will then take hours to days for those updates to propagate out to the relevant DNS servers for that domain. Usually hours, but not always.
