It depends on the level of “simple” you’re looking for. Setting up an e Commerce site isn’t impossible, but it is a challenge. You’ll need (for starters):
A domain name – pick something relevant to your e Commerce business. Do some keyword research first and find out what people are searching for in your area of expertise. This will take a few days to do properly. One you have some good solid keyword ideas, use them in your domain name if possible. Keep your keyword list, you’ll need it later. It’s really important…
A hosting company – if you’re on a budget, use GlobeDomain to host your site. For $5 a year you get 100MB of storage and 1GB of transfer per month, and it’s easily upgradable from there. Later on you can switch to a bigger hosting company if need be.
Product information – info about what you’re selling (description, prices, shipping costs, etc…). Nuff said.
An e Commerce software for the web site – this is the complicated part. Personally I have used ZenCart for many customers, and it works well. Lot’s of features, fairly easy to set up and administer, and it’s open-source (free to use). It’s also fairly SEO friendly, which is a plus. eCommerce software is usually called “shopping cart software”, and if you search for it, you’ll find plenty.
Time – lots and lots of time. Setting up the initial launch of an e Commerce site is very time consuming. You’ll want to have all your items, info, etc. done before the site actually goes live.
Generally speaking, most of the people I have done this for have had between 100 and 1000 or so items. Total setup of the site from beginning to end, including logo design, site submission, directory submission, entering product info, shipping, payment gateways, etc., usually takes from 2 weeks for a small site to 2 months for a big one.
There’s always companies like ProStores, that do most of the work for you with the domain name, hosting, shopping cart and payment gateways, but they usually charge commissions, and it’s a nightmare to move your store to another web host afterwords if you choose to do so. Still, some people have great success with them – depends on the product line I guess.
Hope that helps,

We use Easyspace for our domain names and hosting. They charge about £30 per year plus VAT for each service. We use Roman Cart for our shops – £99 per year plus VAT for up to 500 items, £149 for up to 2000 items. You can upload up to 50 items at a time into the shop and once you’ve uploaded them, they give you the code to put in your site for the ‘buy now’ buttons. Roman Cart links to our business account with Paypal and that’s it.
It may not be the cheapest around but it’s not exorbitant and it works. We sell using this solution. It’s easy to upload your site and you can customise the shop to fit with your brand.
Good luck!
Hi,
I really would not recommend you doing it yourself. Statistically, they say that sales are about 70% lower for people who designed their own site, rather then got it from professionals.
I would strongly recommend you call Digital Forest at 08452263093 . When I was doing research on it I came to conclusion that their prices are unbeatable, they use the best technology in this field, and provide excellent support.
Here is their site : http://digitalforest.co.uk/ and phone nr. 08452263093
This is the site my friend got from them for ridiculously cheap price: http://www.lightningfast.com/index_store…
There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points in Features also.
I like Host Gator. It costs only $7.95. They have a site builder demo tool that you can try before you buy and over 4,500 website templates. http://secure.hostgator.com/cgi-bin/affi…
If you really want to make a decent site, either pay a professional or learn yourself. There are no shortcuts, or you’ll be left with a shoddy site that no-one will buy from.
