I use dyndns.org for a free domain (subdomain) that is pointing to my home computer which I have a server running on. Running your own server is not hard (just install some software) but you have to keep it running all the time. Also bandwidth is an issue. I don’t host any of my real sites on my home server (I have a reseller account at a hosting company for that) but I use the home server as a test server for clients or for accessing my files while I am remote.

You don’t need a .com domain name in order to create a website. You can obviously make a free website, but it’ll be your standard Geocities, Freewebs, etc. subdomain with limited space/features.

If you are looking for a website where you just “sign up” and you get a free domain name + free hosting within 5 seconds, there is no such thing.
Also, if you are just starting out in web design, I don’t advice you to get a domain name unless you have an experienced friend who is patient with you. Web design takes patience. If you want a domain name, but can’t buy one right now, just wait until you can buy one. If want a domain name *now*, web design isn’t for you. If you don’t have patience, you’ll fail miserably.

Getting a domain + a web host for a www.*your domain here*.com for free is pretty much impossible. Although if you are so desperate search “piczo”, “freewebs”, “zoomshare” or “geocities” in google. They are free site things but. Say if your website was a dwarf hamster website called “cutedwarfhamsters” then it would be (lets just say you picked zoomshare)

Piczo, zoomshare, geocities and so on are all free and easy to use but all domains will end in “.piczo.com” or “.geocities.com” – you get the idea. Good luck!

I agree Googlepages or Geosites there are plenty of places on the web to host as long as you don’t mind ads to support the hosting. The other options is Blogspot.com you can create a blog to say what you want to without having to have website creation software, a domain name etc. Domain names for free do not exist, there are costs in registering them etc. Godaddy.com is the best and most cost effective place to get one if you want your own. They also have a place you can make a basic webpage.
