Assuming that you find a site that uses a reputable payment processor, it doesn’t matter who you purchase a domain name from, since they have to register it with InterNIC and ICANN.
When you purchase a domain name, it’s yours, regardless of who you purchase it from. Your only risk is purchasing it from a site that is out to swipe credit card numbers.
There are many reputable web hosts out there. I personally use 1 & 1 because they have very cheap hosting and their packages include domain names for free.http://www.1and1.com
GoDaddy.com is another reputable source. If you search on Yahoo for domain name purchasing, the reputable sites will be easy to spot at the top of the listings.

The “most trusted”, in my opinion, would be NetworkSolutions.com. It’s a very good company and where I do most of my business. However they charge an arm and a leg. GoDaddy.com is reputable and inexpensive.
