Will Putting A New Power Supply In My Computer Blow It Up?!?

Category: FAQ   Time: 2009-07-02   Tags: , , , , ,

Im planning on buying a new power supply for my packard bell ipower 8620 which i think is running on a 300 watt at the moment although the new graphics card inside it Geforce 9600 GT is supposed to be running at a min of 450 watt although it still works!. good stuff. anywayz i was planning on getting a 600 watt power supply but i was wondering if an 800 watt would blow the motherboard? Also does the power supply plug that goes into the motherboard have to be adzactly the same amount of plugs e.g. if there 24 on my mother board does the mains cable need to be 24 pins aswell!?,.
cheers

An 800 Watt or even 600 watt PSU will serve you really well. As long as you insert the PSU with care then you won’t have any difficulties. Now for the second part of your question regarding the 24pins, if you buy a PSU with only 20 pins you can buy a connector fitting the 20 pin on the PSU and the 24 pin onto the motherboard. This costs on ebay 99p or in shops around £3.99 you still get the same power so you don’t lose anything.
If you have any doubts I recommend going to a PC shop and asking all the questions there.
    Good luck!!!

power supply in computer are called as SMPS. they are Switching Mode Power Supply, it takes power only as much as it requires above a minimum threshold.
Having a high end graphics card does require a highter SMPS. So if manufacturer recommends 450watts then go for it. If you have more than 2 hard disks inside then you need to buy a 600Watts powersupply.
800 watts will really serve no purpose. Its like you taking a 24 inch dish to eat your dinner instead of the regular 12 inch plate. Will you really have some advantage eating with a bigger plate ? none. Same thing between 600 and 800 watts SMPS
    Word of Caution :
800 watts powersupply will not blow up your PC its perfectly safe BUT your 300 watts SMPS will BUST your motherboard CPU, memory, harddisks, DVD drive because of OVERLOAD if you don’t upgrade.

watts is a capacity to supply so will not blow your pc
But must be correct voltage and ALL connects must fit EXACTLY
Too small may cause some instability and failures
Too large just gives unused capacity for future up-grades

The only way to determine this answer is to look in your motherboard manual.
